Internet "Second Skin". The 'smart clothes' are Second Skin.
Virtual architecture is Second Skin. Computers with 'Kansei' are Second
Skin. And the "Second Skin" is the central theme of ART FUTURA-98.

The ninth edition of the leading electronic art festival in Spain is
taking off this time with one of the most polemic and revolutionary
themes of our time, the theme of the increasing incorporation of new
technologies that are transporting the real world into the virtual
world. Computer science is everywhere, to the point that today we
understand 'personal computer' from the acronym PC. This is the
movement of history, its advancements and consequences are

It does not matter if we call it the "Digital Era" (like Negroponte),
the "Information Era" (like Manuel Castells) or the "Number Era". It
announces a transformation with economic, social and cultural changes
without precedence. Tens of thousands of people are already living most
of their lives in that parallel world called cyberspace, and it is
anticipated that one million people will be connected by the year 2000.

The 'smart clothes' that reach us from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) will perform the same function. They will improve
human capabilities. They are an "Extended skin". A trivial example, the
'intelligent glasses': When their owner runs into a friend on the
street and cannot remember his name, the glasses immediately whisper it
into his ear. Evidently, the glasses are equipped with a micro-camera
and a software that supply the recognition of the person.

Second Skin is independence, autonomy and information. Its technology
is always getting 'friendlier'. "It is not about -as confirmed by the
philosopher Pierre Levy- designing machines that can think more and
better than us, but rather the creation of communication devices that we
think with."

Josť Antonio Mayo.
