A partir de los años cincuenta surge una nueva iconografía para identificar al poder. Salas oscuras y selladas al exterior, llenas de pantallas mostrando toda clase de datos, pobladas por analistas que filtran e interpretan la información que reciben en tiempo real. Casi siempre, un gran mapa del mundo lleno de luces parpadeantes preside la escena. Son las “salas de control” o “salas de situación”. Surgidas tras la segunda guerra mundial –el primer conflicto en que la interceptación de datos se convierte en un frente de batalla crucial– las salas de situación son hoy los puentes de mando de las estructuras militares, económicas y políticas.

Presentes en centrales nucleares o centros de control de tráfico, las salas de situación forman parte del imaginario popular heredado de la guerra fría. Algunas han sido escenario de momentos clave del siglo XX, como la que se encuentra en el sótano del ala oeste de la Casa Blanca, construida por Kennedy tras el fracaso de la invasión de Bahía de Cochinos. Otras son atracciones turísticas que pueden visitarse discretamente, como el Control de Misión del centro espacial Lyndon B. Johnson de la NASA (el “Houston” de “Houston, tenemos un problema”).

Situation Room, el proyecto ganador del primer premio Labjoven Experimenta que otorgan LABoral y el Instituto Asturiano de la Juventud, propone el despliegue de una sala de situación para la sociedad civil. La instalación cuenta con los elementos escénicos propios de estas arquitecturas –ordenadores en una gran mesa circular, proyecciones, dispositivos de control– y sus sistemas están diseñados para monitorizar un dominio específico: el territorio asturiano, y su realidad en el contexto global. En los dos meses que estará activa en una de las plataformas de LABoral serán los ciudadanos los que hagan el papel de analistas; los que decidirán en un proceso de trabajo permanente qué datos han de recabarse para mapear las dimensiones de una realidad compleja.
